It's been a busy year and there was not as much time to train for Boston as last year.  Went into the race with a pulled muscle in my back which thankfully does not hurt when I run (it actually feels better when I run). It was a beautiful day, and I am happy with my time.  Requalified.   Felt the best I ever have after a marathon - to leg cramps, no new injuries.  Amazing day.

RRS 1st 5K.  Have been in physical therapy for 6 weeks for a psoas muscle injury.  Was leary about pushing too much since it still hurts when I do, but not as bad as it did.  It was hot, humid, and hard to breathe even at 7 am.  Disappointed in my race time - same course last year was 23:30.  Any suggestions from the blog on how to get back there with this injury?

Hey there! I don't know anything about that muscle. I would keep in PT.

From aroundthebend on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 22:16:52 from 75.66.171.171

The psoas muscle is in the back, a deep muscle, on each side, extends around to the front. I have been doing the stretching and core-strengthening exercises recommended by the PT. When I first went to PT, she said, 'this muscle is on fire', which is exactly how it felt. It is better than it was, and now only hurts when I really push my running pace, or when I sit for long periods of time (which my job requires), or do a lot of bending over or lifting. The injury seems to be an overuse injury and is related to not enough core strength.

Thanks for the comment Michelle - hope you are doing well. Congratulations on your recent race!

MRTC RRS 2nd 5K, 7 am.  It was hot and humid, but unlike last time, you could actually breathe.  My time was better than last race but still not where I'd like to be.  Passed in the last few yards by another lady in my age group, so not sure what my division place is yet (turns out 2nd grandmasters).  There were a few superfast masters age groupers way ahead.

Have not been able to push the pace much in training or racing yet because the psoas muscle is still sore.  Trying not to do any heavy lifting this week to see if that makes a difference.  Keeping up 2 training runs per day as my work schedule permits.  That seems to allow me to put in more distance without the strain on the back muscle.

Next up are the 5 milers in august.

Race day, and feeling 'iffy' when I got up.  Feeling like I have food poisoning or a stomach bug.  To make a long story short, went to the race and started but within the first 100 yards, I knew I would hurt myself if I continued, so I took a left turn instead of right at the second intersection and went home.  Was seriously sick the rest of the day and fell asleep early again.  I have never not finished a race and don't plan to make a habit of it.  2nd 5-miler is in 2 weeks.  Thank goodness for second chances!

RRS 2nd 5 miler.  Felt good, and took off fast.  The chrono mode for my watch did not work, so I just timed it from the HH:MM:SS from the time of day.  Race started at 7 am.  At mile 1, the watch said 7:06, and I couldn't see the seconds, but I read it as 7 minutes by mistake, so the first mile was 6 something.  Kept track of the minutes, and felt good for most of the race but was slower mile 4 to 5.  Was able to pick up the pace somewhat during mile 5 but wished I had had a little more left during the last mile.   Overall, very happy with the race.  Was 3rd or maybe 2nd in grandmasters female, but they listed one very fast runner in both masters and grandmasters category.  If she is counted as masters, then I was 2nd.

Rode the mountain bike 10 miles with the family on the greenline just before lunchtime.
