Welcome to the blog! We would love to know more details on the side like when your major race is, or at what marathon you'll be attempting Boston. Happy running (and biking and swimming!).

Weclome to the blog, nice job on the mileage this week!

From Lybi on Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 20:47:37

Welcome! You've got a cool picture! You look very focused! Good luck on your running.

From aroundthebend on Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 08:29:16

Thanks for all the welcome comments! I'm hoping to do a marathon in mid-February. I've been increasing mileage since mid-September - trying to have time for enough long runs to avoid injury. I ran the NYC marathon last year (first marathon) after training 4 months on the beginner plan and in the last 3 miles of the race, injured my IT band and sciatic nerve - ended up in physical therapy and couldn't run for 3 months. Hoping not to repeat that. : )

So searching out on the web, I found and read Sasha's article about qualifying for Boston, which is one of my goals, and joined the blog! Thanks for the great article, Sasha!

Cold and windy! Fun race at Shelby Farms park. 3rd in age group. Tri teammate Jeanine won 1st in our age group. Lucia was 2nd. Age group winners (3 deep) got pumpkin pies! I think that was a PR for 4 miles.

From Lybi on Thu, Nov 22, 2007 at 19:22:05

Congratulations on a PR! I think you'll find that you'll set PRs at all distances if you keep up this solid training. You forgot to mention the most importand detail of your race--how many guys you "chicked" at the end. ;) He he he.

From aroundthebend on Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 08:14:12

Thanks, Lybi! "chicked" - LOL! I love it! Had not heard that one before. I was busy holding off my age-group competition. She passed me just after mile 2, I passed her shortly thereafter. She challenged me one more time in the last ~.2 mile but I was able to pass her again. It was the difference between 3rd with an award and going away empty-handed. This was a first for me. Previously, I would have given up and let her go, but darn, I trained too hard to give up! Winning isn't everything, but it is kinda fun.

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 08:57:33

Good work! This shows you have enough speed to run 3:30 marathon. This race, as well as the discrepancy between your half-marathon and full marathon PRs (the half is of a much higher quality relative to the full) shows that the gold mine to mine is building the aerobic base. If this sound like something you can handle, you should probably start with 7 miles a day 6 days a week of easy, very comfortable conversational running. The idea is to get as many miles in as possible without getting injured or overtrained. You can handle a lot more if you ease off on the pace, and the aerobic benefits are the same even if you run slower.

From aroundthebend on Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 18:02:50

Thanks, Sasha. I'll start with the 7 miles a day 6 days a week. I've been running a long run on Sundays and have gotten up to 16 miles. Next Saturday is a local half-marathon I signed up for, so will be racing then. Is there a pace you suggest for the 7 miles? Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement! Nicki

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 21:04:10

Probably around 9:00 mile. However, do not worry too much about the clock. Run whatever feels easy. For the half, unless it is some major serious key race, do not taper, treat it as a long tempo time trial type of run.

I would like to try some triathlons in a few years. However, I need better swimming technique.

From aroundthebend on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 07:12:04

Hi James, Yes, the swimming event is the reason many people I've talked to don't do triathlons. The triathletes who are most comfortable in the swim are those who swam competetively in high school or college, which makes sense. Swimming is still my weakest event. I'm told technique is the key to efficient and strong swimming, and it takes time and practice to develop it. I'm still working on that one. ; )One other factor is the open-water swim, which is totally different than practicing in the pool! Pool practice is great for technique and building endurance, but regular open-water swims, if you have a place to do them, are key to training for real race conditions. One good way to try out triathlons is to do an indoor triathlon. These are becoming and increasingly popular offering of fitness clubs - you swim in the pool, bike on the stationary cycles, and run on the treadmill. Training for a sprint distance triathlon is also an attainable goal, and many have a beginners division.

I thought that I was the only Memphian on this blog (actually Arlington). I will be spectating for the first time in years due to an injury. Best of luck to you today (5:40 a.m.). The weather looks perfect!

From aroundthebend on Sun, Dec 02, 2007 at 08:31:27

Thanks for all the good luck wishes! Hi Mikey B. Glad to see another Memphis-area runner here. Sorry to hear about your injury - hope you are recovering well! Are you back to training/racing?

From Mike on Sun, Dec 02, 2007 at 08:42:58

Yes, I am recovering from two stress fractures. They were my first two injuries, ever. I have been back at it for 2 months and could have run the half this year, but I am too hard on myself and wouldn't allow myself to run unless I was in PR shape. My stupid, male ego won out. It was fun spectating and I have already registered for the G-town half in March! I was going to Boston in April, but a family trip to Disney in February will probably wipe out future vacations for the next 10 years. It is on hold at the time.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

Highlights of the race -

The beautiful sunny day and moderate temperatures (it can be damp and cold for this race). The headwind, however, did make it challenging.

Running the beginning of the race with triathlon teammates, many of whom were running the full marathon.

The enthusiastic volunteers, music, and bands along the course.

The rolling hills - another challenge.

High-fiving a little girl at mile 10 who was obviously a St. Jude patient and seeing parents of St. Jude patients along the course with posters of their kids saying thanks for running.

Feeling really good until about mile 9, then starting to struggle at mile 11 with a left quad cramp.  Then just focused on finishing up.

Finishing with my second-best half marathon time of 1:49:55.  I'm so excited about this!

Finishing in time to see the elite runners finish their full marathon.  I did see Sasha come in - congratulations on a great race Sasha!   You were the one with the St. George running singlet, right?  I hope you come back next year!

That is so sweet about giving a high five to that little girl! Bet you made her day. Nice to remember that running these races is supposed to help other people out, not just to get a faster time. Your time was GREAT though! I am impressed. I bet that if you ran St. George you would get a BQ. You should try it--it's a great race.

Quick question - what distance should I run today?  I'm trying to do 7 miles 6 days a week, but since this is the day after a hard effort in 13.1 miles, what type of training should be included?  I'm thinking a slow recovery run, but what is a reasonable mileage?

Thanks, Paul.  5 very slow miles it was, with 2 walk intervals.

I've felt like I was fighting off a cold all weekend woke up with a cough this morning, feeling very tired and cold.  It got worse during the morning at work, and  I was fortunate enough to get an appointment to see the doctor at lunchtime.  He said I have "a little bronchitis" and gave me antibiotics and decongestant.  By the end of the work day, I still felt wiped out and was coughing, so it looks like no run tonight.    It is chilly and rainy right now too, so I'll get to bed early and hope to feel better tomorrow.  Hoping the medicine kicks in overnight.
