I would like to try some triathlons in a few years. However, I need better swimming technique.

Hi James, Yes, the swimming event is the reason many people I've talked to don't do triathlons. The triathletes who are most comfortable in the swim are those who swam competetively in high school or college, which makes sense. Swimming is still my weakest event. I'm told technique is the key to efficient and strong swimming, and it takes time and practice to develop it. I'm still working on that one. ; )One other factor is the open-water swim, which is totally different than practicing in the pool! Pool practice is great for technique and building endurance, but regular open-water swims, if you have a place to do them, are key to training for real race conditions. One good way to try out triathlons is to do an indoor triathlon. These are becoming and increasingly popular offering of fitness clubs - you swim in the pool, bike on the stationary cycles, and run on the treadmill. Training for a sprint distance triathlon is also an attainable goal, and many have a beginners division.
